History and Overview
Established in May 1995, the Lucile Plane State Jail holds the distinction of being the first women's state jail opened in Texas. Located approximately five miles north of Dayton, Texas, on Highway 321, the facility occupies a 394-acre site.
It is strategically co-located with the L.V. Hightower Unit and the Henley State Jail, creating a cluster of correctional resources in the Liberty County area. Since its inception, the unit has played a specific role in the state's efforts to manage and process state jail felons, providing a secure environment tailored to the needs of the female incarcerated population.

The Plane Unit is exclusively a facility for female inmates. It is categorized as a "state jail," a classification designed for offenders sentenced to shorter terms for non-violent offenses, though the population can include a mix of custody levels.
