The Power of Continuing Ministry

The introductory 3½-day Kairos Weekend is an incredibly powerful, life-changing encounter with the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ. But as experienced Kairos volunteers know, a weekend on the mountaintop is only the beginning.

 

The true heart of Kairos Prison Ministry International (KPMI) lies in its Continuing Ministry. Without consistent, structured follow-up, the spark ignited during the initial weekend can easily be snuffed out by the harsh realities and daily pressures of the prison environment.

Alongside weekly Prayer and Share groups and monthly Reunions, the 1 and 2-Day Retreats serve as vital spiritual tune-ups that deepen community, offer ongoing encouragement, and keep residents anchored in their faith walk.

Why the Continuing Ministry Matters

Incarcerated individuals live in an environment designed around survival, isolation, and distrust. When they transition back into the general population after a Kairos Weekend, they face immense spiritual warfare and social pressure.

Continuing Ministry acts as the scaffolding that holds the new Christian community together.

  • Preventing "Falling Away": The retreats offer a safe haven for those who feel themselves slipping back into old patterns or survival habits.
  • Fostering Accountability: They reinforce the weekly structure of the 3-to-6 person Prayer and Share groups.
  • Transforming Prison Culture: As these small groups persist and grow, prison violence decreases, and a positive, supportive peer culture takes root inside the walls.

What Happens at a 1 or 2-Day Kairos Retreat?

Held approximately three months after a 3½-day Weekend (and periodically throughout the year), these retreats are designed to re-energize the entire Kairos community inside the institution.

The program is run by a small, focused team of at least 10 Kairos volunteers and is open to all residents who have previously completed a Kairos Weekend.

Key Components of the Retreat

Reconnection & Worship
Morning

The retreat begins by gathering the community back together. Volunteers and residents share in music, opening prayers, and fellowship to break down walls and re-establish a spirit of safety and love.

Focused Spiritual Talks
Mid-day

Volunteers deliver carefully chosen, curriculum-approved talks designed to target common spiritual obstacles in prison, such as handling conflict, deepening prayer lives, and practicing forgiveness.

Small-Group Discussion & Vulnerability
Afternoon

Following the talks, participants break into small groups. Using structured prompts, they share where they are struggling, celebrate spiritual victories, and practice authentic vulnerability.

Prayer & Group Accountability
Closing

The retreat concludes with intentional prayer over the participants and concrete steps to help them jumpstart or maintain their weekly Prayer and Share accountability groups.

Statement of Faith

The people of Kairos are called by God to share the love of Christ with those impacted by incarceration. Kairos encourages believers from a variety of Christian traditions to be volunteers in this Christ-filled ministry.

Kairos programs offer to prison residents, their families, and those who work with them the opportunity to receive God’s forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ, and to grow in their faith and servant hood in Christian community. We stand on the common ground of the following elements of faith:

We in Kairos believe:

  •  The Bible is God’s authoritative and inspired word for our faith and our lives.
  •  In the Trinity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  •  In the deity, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  •  Friendship with God is a free gift, for God so loved the world that He gave His one and only son so that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.
  •  The love of Jesus Christ motivates His followers to provide food for the hungry, drink to the thirsty, welcome to the stranger, clothes for the naked and visits to the sick and those in prison.
  •  In sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ with all incarcerated individuals, their families and to those who work with them inside and outside the correctional institution.

Agreement

By my signature, as a faithful member on a Kairos Inside team:

  1. I will obtain a current Kairos Inside manual. I will read the manual and I will follow the program as it is presented in the Kairos Inside manual with no unauthorized additions or deletions.
  2. I will make every effort to attend ALL team meetings. I understand that if I miss these team meetings, I could be dismissed from the team.
  3. After becoming familiar with the program, as a Christian I agree to support, in good faith, the Weekend activities, as well as the theological and scriptural content of the Talks/Meditations outlined in the Kairos Inside manual.
  4. I am a Christian and I have read and agree with the Mission Statement, the Vision Statement, the CORE Values, and the Statement of Faith of Kairos Prison Ministry International, Inc.
